In 1826 at the age of 13 he was sent to Frankfurt to study under Ferdinand Ries, an old friend of the family. In 1828 at the age of 15 he came back to England. In 1834 at the age of 21 he wrote Nourjahad which was well received. He spent the ensuing years earning a living with hackwork (songs and partsongs) for a publisher, writing operatic potboilers and as the musical director of the Princess's Theatre, London. In 1851 at the age of 38 he became the opera conductor of the Manchester Theatre Royal. In 1855 his best known opera Raymond and Agnes was performed. For most of his remaining years he was ill. |
