Opera with 'German' themes of nature, the supernatural and folklore. Contains spoken dialogue, recitatives and arias.

German genre derived from earlier French opéras comiques. Spoken dialogue, originally included with musical numbers, was eventually eliminated in works by Richard Wagner.
